How Do You Sell €150 Whiskey in Ireland? A Hard Sell Won't Work

How to Sell €150 Whiskey in Ireland — Google Ads, Demand Gen, YouTube, Brand Search, Tours

One of the most interesting requests I get: “make people buy our premium product through Google Ads.” And when the product costs 5-6 times more than the market average, the honest answer is an unpleasant one: a hard sell doesn't work. Here's a full breakdown of the strategy on a real case — a craft Irish Single Malt Whiskey at ~€150.

1. Starting Point and the Core Problem

Product and Price

The client is an Irish craft distillery producing Single Malt Irish Whiskey at ~€150 a bottle. The average mass-market price for Irish whiskey is €20-30. The product sits in the premium segment, 5-6 times above the mass market.

Why a “Hard Sell” Doesn't Work

Selling premium craft alcohol directly through search ads is impossible for two reasons:

  • The price barrier. Someone searching for “Irish Whiskey” expects to pay €20-30. Seeing €150 without understanding the value, they'll simply close the page.
  • No familiarity with the brand. Nobody buys a pig in a poke for €150, even if the product is objectively excellent. The value proposition isn't communicated in any way.

2. Competitor Analysis — The Crolly Distillery

What the Competitor Got Right

Crolly Distillery built its product line around funnel logic:

  • samples and miniatures — the lowest entry price, letting people try with no risk;
  • a core product at ~€50 — an affordable first point of contact with the brand;
  • a premium product at ~€150+ — for those who have already tried it and are convinced;
  • gift sets — for seasonal sales and gifts.

The competitor's main advantage is a well-built product line: there's somewhere to bring a new customer with no risk to them. My client currently has essentially one product at €150, which makes a classic funnel impossible.

The Client's Advantage — Distillery Tours

Unlike the competitor, our client has its own tourism product — whiskey tours of the distillery. That's a powerful mechanism for attracting a new audience and converting it into sales:

  • a person comes on a tour → tastes the product → ends up in the distillery shop → buys without any advertising pressure. They're already “in the funnel”;
  • queries like “whiskey tour Ireland” and “whiskey distillery tour Clare” have real search volume and PPC potential;
  • a tour solves the “pig in a poke” problem: after the tasting, the person already knows the product and is ready to buy even at €150.

Promoting the tours is one of the most effective channels for this client and should be launched first.

3. Promotion Strategy

Core principle: not a “hard sell”, but building awareness → trust → sale. Time horizon: at least 6 months.

Google Ads — Search Campaigns

What works:

  • branded queries — the only justified search targeting. The goal: catch people who have already come into contact with the brand through other channels and send them to the landing page;
  • whiskey tour queries — keywords for promoting the distillery tour.

What doesn't work (exclude):

  • generic queries “Irish Whiskey”, “Single Malt Whiskey”, “Irish Whiskey online” — they bring irrelevant traffic with mass-market intent. Budget straight down the drain;
  • competitors' branded queries without warming up first — the person lands, sees the price with no context and leaves immediately.

Google Ads — Demand Gen (Demand Creation Campaigns)

The main tool for the top of the funnel. The goal isn't a sale, it's building awareness of the distillery and the product itself:

  • YouTube video ads: show people interested in craft spirits, whiskey and Irish culture videos about the distillery, the production process and what makes the product unique;
  • Display Network: banner ads on relevant sites for an audience into premium spirits and gastronomy;
  • remarketing: a repeat touchpoint with people who have already interacted with the brand.

Expected dynamics: growth in branded searches should become noticeable roughly 6 months after launch.

YouTube — Own Content and Partner Reviews

The client's channel is currently a disaster. What's needed:

  • regular original content: videos about the distillery, production, the team, the craft process of making Single Malt;
  • YouTube Shorts: short vertical videos to reach a new audience;
  • partner reviews: bringing in spirits/whiskey YouTubers and reviewers for independent reviews — people trust third-party opinions more than brand advertising.

Instagram / Meta

  • static content (photos): the top level of the funnel — getting to know the brand through aesthetics, status and the atmosphere of the distillery;
  • video / Reels: showing the product, the production process, a premium lifestyle;
  • targeted ads: interest-based audiences (whiskey, craft spirits, gastronomy, premium travel).
All visual content must communicate premium quality and status. A cheap look = dead sales.

4. Product Recommendations

This lies outside search advertising, but if it isn't solved, any marketing will be ineffective:

  • add samples/miniatures — the lowest entry price to try the product with no risk. If the sample is good, they'll become a customer; if it's bad, they'll never come back to the expensive product;
  • consider an affordable product in the line (~€50) — a lower entry point for getting acquainted, the way the competitor did it;
  • scale the distillery tours — active promotion through PPC and local SEO on whiskey tour queries, plus targeted ads.

5. Strategic Roadmap Summary

Horizon: 6+ months.

PeriodWhat we do
Mo. 1-2Set up branded search campaigns. Launch Demand Gen (YouTube + Display). Launch PPC on whiskey tour queries. Produce content for YouTube and Instagram
Mo. 3-4Partner reviews on YouTube. A/B testing of creatives in Demand Gen. Launch Meta targeting
Mo. 5-6Evaluate branded search dynamics. Remarketing to all audiences that have interacted with the brand. Scale the channels that showed growth

6. Conclusion

Selling craft Irish Whiskey at €150 with a hard sell through Google Ads is impossible. The only strategy that works is integrated marketing:

  • build awareness through YouTube, Instagram and partner content;
  • warm up demand through Demand Gen campaigns and display advertising;
  • use the tours as an offline funnel for a new audience;
  • capture the branded demand you've created through search campaigns;
  • solve the product problem in parallel: samples and an affordable entry product.

Otherwise, any advertising will just burn the budget.

FAQ on the topic

Frequently asked questions

Why can't you sell premium alcohol with a hard sell through search ads?
Because of two barriers: price (someone looking for a mass-market bottle at €20-30 who sees €150 with no context of value will simply close the page) and zero familiarity with the brand — nobody buys a pig in a poke for that kind of money.
What are Demand Gen campaigns and why are they needed here?
Demand Gen is a Google Ads campaign type for creating demand through YouTube and the Display Network. The goal isn't a sale, it's building awareness of the brand and the product among people who don't know it yet.
Which search queries should be excluded from the keyword list?
Generic queries like “Irish Whiskey” or “Single Malt Whiskey” — they carry mass-market intent and bring irrelevant traffic. Without warming up the audience first, that's budget straight down the drain.
How long does this strategy take to show results?
At least 6 months. This isn't a hard sell you can calculate right away — it takes time to build brand awareness, trust and growth in branded searches.
Why are distillery tours so important for the strategy?
A tour solves the “pig in a poke” problem: the person tastes the product live, gets to know the brand, and then buys in the distillery shop with zero advertising pressure — they're already in the sales funnel.
