How I tag links

  • Lowercase only and no spaces. For GA4, Facebook and facebook are two different sources, and your report falls apart.
  • UTMs are optional for Google Ads: auto-tagging (gclid) passes everything to GA4 on its own. You need UTMs when a CRM or another analytics system also reads the Google Ads data. In that case set them in an account-level tracking template: the “Google Ads: tracking template” preset above.
  • Never tag internal links on your own site. A visitor who came from an ad and clicked a banner on your site becomes a new session with a different source.
  • One channel, one utm_medium value across all campaigns. Otherwise GA4 will put the traffic into the wrong channel groups.

FAQ

What are UTM parameters?

Tags at the end of a link that tell Google Analytics the source, medium and campaign a visitor came from.

Do I need UTMs for Google Ads?

Not if auto-tagging is on and Google Ads is linked to GA4. You need UTMs when a CRM or another analytics system has to see the traffic source.

What is {lpurl} in a tracking template?

A ValueTrack parameter that Google Ads replaces with the ad’s final URL. {campaignid}, {adgroupid}, {keyword} and {creative} are likewise replaced with the campaign ID, ad group ID, keyword and ad ID.

Are my links stored anywhere?

Only in your browser. The history of your last 15 links and the form values are kept in localStorage and are never sent anywhere.
